European Champion Quartet, The MIX have two members within the ranks of the Cheshire Chord Company.
Their lead is Jo Braham who is Cheshire Chord’s Musical director, and their tenor is Andrea Day, our Assistant Musical Director. On baritone is Nancy Kelsall and Bass, Sandra Lea-Riley who are both part of the Heartbeat Chorus.
Hannah and the Hurricanes
Hannah and Andrea sing with the chorus and their partners, Tim and Duncan are also barbershoppers. They formed Hannah and the Hurricanes in the Summer of 2014 and were very proud to become UK Mixed Quartet Champions that November and go on to retain their title in 2015.
In 2016 they qualified to represent the UK at the World Championships for mixed quartets which is held every two years in Germany. They were delighted to be awarded the silver medal with a score of 83.6% – one of the highest scores that any British quartet has ever achieved.
Andrea also sings with ladies European quartet champions The MIX, Tim with 2013 BABS champions The Emerald Guard and Duncan with Reckless who represented the UK at the International Barbershop Championships in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Tim also directs his own ladies Sweet Adeline chorus, Sheffield Harmony and the BABS Championship Chorus Hallmark of Harmony.
The name of the quartet pays homage to the original name for The Great British Barbershop Boys when they formed at a BABS Harmony college – “Tim Braham and the Hurricanes”.
Cosmopolitan decided to start singing together in November 2015 and haven’t looked back since! As you can tell by our name, we love a good cocktail…!
Erika sings bass – but only since last year when we discovered her awesome bass voice. She is a primary school teacher so we have to behave ourselves in rehearsals! This is her first quartet.
Rachel sings the baritone line. She’s the clever one; not surprisingly as she’s officially Doctor Sheldon (in maths, not medicine!) She keeps all our heads screwed on and looks after our finances and the diary. This is also her first quartet!
Hannah is the lead and a student at the University of Sheffield. Hannah is the music nerd in the quartet and loves to find new music for the girls. She studies a Music Degree so we trust her! Hannah also sings lead with Hannah and the Hurricanes.
Sarah sings tenor in the quartet. Sarah sings with The Belles of Three Spires and won a LABBS gold medal with Miss-Demeanour in 2010, so we’re guessing she knows what she’s doing!
Cosmopolitan recently came 4th in the Quartet Finals at the LABBS Convention in Harrogate in October 2016. An amazing accomplishment for their first national competition.
Halo have been singing together since January 2014. Tenor Jane sings with Cheshire Chord Company, and the rest of the quartet are with other choruses.
All are relatively new to barbershop and their proudest moment to date was at the 2015 LABBS Convention in Bournemouth where they won the trophy for Most Improved Quartet and got to mic warm for the quartet final.
Kirsten sings bass and is extremely accident prone ! Luckily she is a nurse so can treat all her own injuries.
Nic sings baritone and is the baby of the bunch. She runs her own baking business so is terrible for our waistlines!
Debbie sings lead, jet setter and definitely our princess. Travels the world as cabin crew which means we have to rehearse around her. Apparently it’s all about the lead!
Jane sings tenor and is the lady of the lists, our most efficient and organised member. Book early to avoid disappointment though as she is a very busy socialite!
Shockwave are a new quartet formed in 2017 entirely of chorus members. Sue Bottom sings tenor, our assistant MD Andrea Day sings lead, Lisa Snow is on baritone, and Andrea Teasdale is on bass.
Shockwave qualified for the LABBS semi-finals at prelims in June 2017, and are very excited to take to the stage in October!
Ad Hoc is made up entirely of chorus members: Bass – Kath Whitehouse; Baritone – Yvonne Dobson/Julie Westgate; Lead – Gill Clare; Tenor – Victoria Chin. The clever among you will have noticed that there are actually 5 of them!
Ad Hoc was formed on the basis exactly as the name suggests-Ad Hoc! The quartet initially got together just to attend the LABBS Quartet Education Day but they enjoyed it so much that they decided to carry on. Their aim: to enjoy singing together and to be the best they can be.
However, baritone babe Yvonne is a festival babe and was already booked into Glastonbury in June, hence the lovely Julie stepped in to help out. Ad Hoc will get some experience on the contest stage at LABBS prelims 2017 and then, who knows? Watch this space…
