Earlier this year our Chairwoman, Yvonne Dobson , decided that she wanted to carry out a challenge to raise money for her chosen charity for the chorus, CLIC Sargent. And who better than to ask to take part, than a chorus full of women, ready to rise to any difficult challenge.
So in July, on a very wet and dull day, 12 members (plus family and friends) took on the ‘Mini-Peak Challenge’ in Derbyshire, climbing three hills, over 12 miles, within 6 hours, and we were ecstatic to raise £300 towards our fundraising efforts.
Then came the main event, taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks in under 12 hours, and four of our members were willing to take on this challenge.
Yvonne (Chair), Kelly (Vice-Chair), Jo (Music Director) & Janet (Baritone Extraordinaire), along with an incredible team of support, had a very early start on Saturday 24th September, meeting at 6:30am to begin their 26 mile-long adventure.
They reached the top of the first peak, Pen-y-Ghent, within 1hr 15mins! Maybe this was going to be easier than they thought! However the walk to the next Peak was 10 miles….maybe not. Luckily the support team (mainly one of our brilliant Basses, Jude) were on hand to offer breakfast after a couple of miles, before the team set off again for the second Peak.
The team eventually reach the top of Whernside at 12:35pm, nearly five hours after reaching their first peak. Surely it was going to get a little easier now they were over half way?
The hills had a different idea for our challengers and after a very tough descent down from the mountain, the walkers met up with the Support Team once again for their second pitstop. The refuel spurred the ladies on to complete their final ascent and they were very happy to reach the top of Ingleborough at 3:45pm. Now they had just under three hours to travel the 9 miles back to their final destination, the Pen-Y-Ghent café where they had started.
Just in case they weren’t sure if they were tired enough, Yvonne and Kelly decided to run the final three miles clocking in at the café at 5:15pm!
And with Jo and Janet reaching the café just 45 mins later, the whole team were overjoyed to complete the challenge in 11hrs 30mins!
A fabulous effort by incredible and determined ladies!
What they didn’t know yet was that whilst they were walking, their fundraising page had been taking quite a number of donations and Cheshire Chord Company are pleased to have raised over £1000 for the charity CLIC Sargent so far!
